FamViewer 1.0.2
November 24, 2008 by Administrator · Leave a Comment
FamViewer, a genealogy application/GEDCOM viewer for the iPhone and iPod touch, has been updated to 1.0.2, as of last week.
There’s only one change, but it’s a major one. Importing/uploading of large GEDCOM files into FamViewer has been improved.
More GEDCOM files are now accepted by FamViewer instead of being rejected.

MobileGenealogy.com – November, 2008
November 18, 2008 by Administrator · Leave a Comment
You may have noticed a lot of activity here over the past two weeks. It’s been a few years since MobileGenealogy.com was updated. Some things occurred, both job and personal-related, and I was unable to maintain the site. That’s all in the past, and I’m bringing this site back, as you can see. I’ve kept it online, and there has been some traffic, plus some comments from people asking questions, etc., so we’ll build on that. As I said below, it may seem like it favors a certain platform, but that’s just until we have the whole site updated which will take another week or so.
As far as the look of the site, I’m working on making it load faster and making it “lighter” so that it’s easier to browse from some of the web browsers available on PDAs and smartphones. I’m also making it easier to navigate. I’m exploring having a style setup for lower resolution browsers while maintaining a style for larger resolutions.
Forums are a new addition to MobileGenealogy.com, and not much else needs to be said. They will cover the topics discussed on the site. If you have comments, this would be the best place to post them, as well as requests for help, comparisons, etc.
The Focus
There was a pretty narrow focus in the past, mainly on PDAs (and certain smartphones) and genealogy software for said devices.
The focus is not changing, it is still going to be genealogy and mobile devices. What’s different is that the mobile field has changed drastically in a few areas: “Netbooks”, iPhones, genealogy podcasts, and the overall drop in price for many PDAs and smartphones, making them available to quite a few more people.

Shrubs 1.3 and 1.4
November 15, 2008 by Administrator · Leave a Comment
Benoît Bousquet has posted on the Shrubs website that Shrubs version 1.3 has been submitted to Apple to be made available in the App Store. It’ll probably be available November 18.
This is mainly a performance release, along with a few updates. Benoit mentions that their testing shows faster file importing and application startup. As a result, the GEDCOM file size limit is being raised to 1MB.
Benoit notes that they believe they will be able to remove the file size limit in version 1.4, which is scheduled to be released before the end of November. Version 1.4 will also include some user suggested features.
Changes in 1.3:
- Improved GEDCOM parsing code
- UNICODE and UTF-8 character sets now supported
- File size limit increased to 1 Mb
- Marked performance increases during import and application startup

Evernote 1.5
November 15, 2008 by Administrator · Leave a Comment
Evernote’s iPhone (and iPod touch) client has been updated to version 1.5, with some major new features for iPod touch owners, namely voice notes (if you have the microphone/headset). Evernote could be described as a note-taking application, but that barely scratches the surface. It stores text notes, web clippings, audio notes, photos (even does optical character recognition on photos you upload). It’s made to synchronize across several mobile platforms and desktop OSes.
This update does not cover the Windows Mobile 5.x or 6.x Evernote client, and is only for the iPhone/iPod Touch client.
New:
- Voice Notes are now available on iPod Touch (2G), requires microphone headset
- Enhanced support for European mobile carriers
- Improved camera orientation handling
Fixed:
- Fixed snapshot-related crashing
- Better note editing in offline mode
- Better error messaging and handling
- Misc bug fixes
