Evernote for iPad

Evernote for iPad Evernote has now been released for the Apple iPad. It is a “Universal” binary, and does not require the 2x mode that some iPhone-formatted apps do – it has full support for the iPad’s hardware.

There is a note on the Evernote blog complete with video showing it off.

In case you’re not familiar with it, Evernote is a free note taking application for various platforms. It allows you to create text notes along with photo, video, and audio notes (assuming you have the proper hardware). It also includes location-awareness data if you have the hardware and have set it up. If you move up to the premium subscription, you can work with PDF, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and other formats. It synchronizes with the Evernote servers so that all of your notes, images, etc., are in sync and can be accessed across various platforms. Yes, it has support for images, and will even do optical character recognition (OCR) on them.

You can see that aspect of it in action in part three of the Griffin Clarifi for iPhone Review that was posted on MobileGenealogy.com a while back.

I’ll post my impressions of a friend’s iPad later today, but suffice to say, Evernote would be a deal-breaker for me as far as getting an iPad, which I’m still looking at doing. No Evernote, no iPad. I keep a lot of my genealogy to-do lists in Evernote, along with a lot of family research as well as notes about various websites, etc.

There are also a couple of fixes included for 3.3.1:
- Fixed synchronization bug on iPhone and iPod Touch
- Fixed search results bug on iPad

It’s supported on the following platforms:
- Web – I’ve used the online/web client in Safari, Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox
- Mac OS X
- Windows
- iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad
- Google Android
- Windows Mobile
- Sony Ericsson X-Series

MacJournal for iPhone Announced

March 24, 2010 by Administrator · Leave a Comment

I know quite a few people who use Mariner Software’s MacJournal journaling software on their Macs for tracking genealogy research. Now they can take it with them wherever they go – Mariner Software has announced a mobile version of MacJournal for the iPhone (and iPod Touch). It costs $4.99 and is available now.

It does allow you to edit and add data and then have it synchronize with MacJournal on your desktop or laptop Mac. You’ll need to have MacJournal running on your Mac and have it be on the same wireless network as you are. From there it looks to be fairly easy – simply select the Mac once you’ve touched the Sync button. There are a few limitations – you can only sync with non-encrypted journals for now, and it only allows for image and text entries being synced. Both of those limitations are due to limitations with the iPhone / iPod Touch, and might be remedied in future iPhone OS updates.

It does support both landscape and portrait modes, and it has a search function for going through previous entries.

I used to use MacJournal and can recommend it for a lot of people. I’ve since moved to Evernote (Evernote.com Evernote) as it offered some functionality I needed at the time and still do (mainly cross-platform – Mac, Windows, Web, iPhone), but I can see quite a few people who will be able to use this.

Evernote 1.5

November 15, 2008 by Administrator · Leave a Comment

Evernote Evernote’s iPhone (and iPod touch) client has been updated to version 1.5, with some major new features for iPod touch owners, namely voice notes (if you have the microphone/headset). Evernote could be described as a note-taking application, but that barely scratches the surface. It stores text notes, web clippings, audio notes, photos (even does optical character recognition on photos you upload). It’s made to synchronize across several mobile platforms and desktop OSes.

This update does not cover the Windows Mobile 5.x or 6.x Evernote client, and is only for the iPhone/iPod Touch client.

- Enhanced support for European mobile carriers
