Pocket Genealogist 4.0 Released

This was a bit of a surprise. I admit to not having kept up on Windows Mobile genealogy software, as I was waiting to see what happens with Windows Phone 7, but Northern Hills Software has released a major update to Pocket Genealogist a few days ago. Pocket Genealogist is a genealogy program that allows you to add, edit, and delete genealogy information on your Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device. It supports reading the genealogy databases of Ancestral Quest, Genbox, Legacy Family Tree (full 2-way syncing), RootsMagic and The Master Genealogist, as well as Personal Ancestral File and Family Tree Maker (separate purchase) depending on what version of Pocket Genealogist you purchase. It supports devices with a touch screen that are running Windows Mobile 2003, 5 or 6, including Phone Edition devices. It supports devices without a touch screen that are running Windows Mobile 5 or 6.

I do mean major updates – Pocket Genealogist 4.0 offers quite a few changes, such as support for capacitive touch devices (finger instead of stylus) which has become the preferred method for a lot of people and companies as far as working for touchscreens. PDF support has been added as well. RootsMagic 4, Family Historian V4, and Family Tree Maker 2010 support has been enhanced. I should have kept an eye on things – there was a public beta last month.

A bonus for “Basic” users – some of the “Advanced” features are now available to Basic users, including GPS, easy back and restore, and a relationship calculator.

Pocket Genealogist 3.00A62 (Public Beta)

The PocketPC/Windows Mobile based genealogy application Pocket Genealogist from Northern Hills Software, has reached version 3.00A62 of the version 3.0 Public Beta.

Note: This requires a re-import of the database, and there were no versions 3.00A60 or 61 released.

Changes:
* Individual View now displays data and you can do edit the selected person, spouses, parents or children from the list or add a new unlinked individual. All secondary (AKA) names are now added to the list as well as primary names. (Primary names marked with an “*”) All other menu items not yet implemented will have no action.
* Family Historian Version changes for Version 3 – reworked LDS status, better support for Repository and Addresses, support for Event “Sentence”, better Child Status support, support for 2nd place field for Emigration/Immigration, support for Flags.
* Support for current Legacy Family Tree beta version.
* FTM 2006 GEDCOM imports now put “Source Quality” and “Comment” source fields on the “Custom Source” tab
* Reworked “Font” sizing and allow selection of the font to use for 3-gen, Trees, Lists and Edit fields. Font selection now supported on all devices. (See “Font” tab under “Edit”, “Configuration”. Also the Windows Mobile Font “Slider” now works for all WM2003SE and later devices.

Pocket Genealogist 3.00A59 (Public Beta)

The Public Beta of Version 3.00A59 of Northern Hills Software’s Pocket Genealogist v3 series is available for download (from here. Pocket Genealogist is a PocketPC/Windows Mobile based genealogy application, and this is a part of the 3.0 public beta series.

It does not appear to require a new importing of the database.

Changes:
* Started the “Individual View”. (Does not yet display any data)
* Changed the font sizes for PocketPC VGA devices to more closely match the text for the rest of the device.
* Fixes to Custom Event processing. (Family Historian and Progen)
* Added tooltips for the Language, Logs and Orphans button on the desktop.
* Added a warning message when “Primary Events Only” is selected.
* Fixed PAF Genbridge import and the use of Scandinavian characters with the “Find by” lists.
* Added new prompt during install for Windows Mobile 5 devices (generally just the phone devices) and the ActiveSync (RAPI) security policy. WM5 by default with Phone Devices will disallow RAPI synchronization. (Which is what Pocket Genealogist uses)

Pocket Genealogist Pre-Release 2.96.20

There is another update for Northern Hills Software’s Pre-Release version of the Pocket Genealogist.

Changes:
* Actually INCLUDES the New GenBridge module which should have been there with 2.96.19.
* Fix to PAF GenBridge import when 1st character of Surname, Given or Location is a Scandinavian character. (diacritic) Prior to change the “Find by” functions on the device was not properly finding those values.

Pocket Genealogist 3.00A58 (Public Beta)

The Public Beta of Version 3.00A58 (includes A57 updates) of Northern Hills Software’s Pocket Genealogist is available. Pocket Genealogist is a PocketPC/Windows Mobile based genealogy application, and this is a part of the 3.0 public beta series.

Two major updates stand out: If you use Family Tree Maker, you need to get this version of the Public Beta. Those using their version 2.0 keys with the version 3 series – that will end in June.
