Apple’s New iPad – March 2012

As expected, Apple released it’s new iPad. They aren’t calling it the iPad 3 or iPad HD, but it comes with the expected “Retina” display resolution of 2048×1536. All Apple stock apps have been optimized for the higher resolution.

There is a huge update on the data speed side for those who purchase the new iPads with data plans – it supports up to 73 Mbps on LTE (AT&T and Verizon in the US, Rogers, Telus, and Bell in Canada). AT&T and Verizon require separate models.

* 44% better color saturation than the iPad 2
* A5X “system-on-chip” (SOC) with quad-core graphics
* Improved 5 Megapixel rear camera (iSight) with similar optics to the 8 MP camera in the iPhone 4S.
* 1080p video recording is supported
* Voice dictation (like the iPhone 4S) is included)
* Up to 73 Mbps on LTE mobile networks

What hasn’t changed or is barely noticeable
* Same battery life – 10 hours on Wi-Fie, 9 hours on 4G LTE.
* 0.6 mm thicker than the iPad 2
* 0.07 pounds heavier than the iPad 2

Ancestry 3.1 iOS App Reviewed – Genealogy Tools

Ancestry.com released Ancestry 3.1 yesterday, a significant update.

While I’m working on a post discussing Apple’s announcements about their new iPad (iPad 3 or iPad HD?) as well as the iPhoto and iWork updates, I thought I’d point out a nice review of the new version of Ancestry.

Ben over at Genealogy Tools has posted a review of just the new features, using an iPad.

He shows off the new hint feature which shows you people who have possible hints about researching them. The new relationship calculator is featured as well, although it maybe limited to showing relationships to the main person in the tree. There is also more information that can be recorded about photos.

Galaxy Nexus as a Genealogy Platform

Keep in mind that the article doesn’t delve into specific genealogy apps on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android – that’s for a later article according to the author, but A. O’Brien is documenting their progress in buying and using a Galaxy Nexus as their mobile genealogy platform.

The reasons given for their purchase:

Due mainly to the great reviews many genealogy bloggers have given their own Samsung Galaxy products, my smartphone of choice was the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The Official Galaxy Nexus web site includes great information, images and videos giving details of Features and Tech Specifications.

As I said, they didn’t get into specific genealogy apps for their Android phone, but they are looking for suggestions – use the link below if you have questions or suggestions for them. They did mention the positive things that do benefit genealogists regardless of what phone or Android tablet you pick up: data connection/transfers are fast, GPS worked well, Wi-Fi worked well, and access to gmail, the web, Google Reader, Google+, etc. worked well.

When they post their next article about specific genealogy apps, I’ll be sure to mention it.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be talking a LOT more about Android and genealogy.
