Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays to everybody – as I said on MacGenealogy.org, things are going to be quiet over the next week – I’ve got a new project I’m working on with a couple of people, and hopefully within a few weeks it will be ready to launch. It’s not a genealogy application (or any kind of application for that matter), but a unique site that will contribute to genealogy research. It will include information of interest to those genealogists who are constantly on the go.
If you want to see something interesting (or want to give the kids something interesting to look at), somebody has put together a genealogy/family tree site about Disney cartoon characters. Thanks to RandomGenealogy.com

* Disable “Hard Reset” for Windows Mobile 5. (Don’t know yet how to do this with this version)
* Fix to Master Lists (Address/Repository and Sources) for Windows Mobile 5
* Changed “Buffer Pool Size” for Windows Mobile 5 database opens, should greatly reduce the amount of memory needed to open a database.
* Fix for synchronization of notes (back to Desktop) for Windows Mobile 5
* “Memory (mounted)” databases now just display “Memory” for Windows Mobile 5 (Object Store databases no longer supported)

Google Launches Gmail Mobile

For those of you who use Google’s Gmail, you can now access it on your cell phone, according to The Register: The small screen support for the popular e-mail account means that users can access their Gmail account from their mobile phone, using the URL http://m.gmail.com.
According to Google, the page will automatically optimise its interface for whatever phone you are using, adjusting it depending on the size of your mobile phone screen. The service also allows users to open attachments such as photos, Microsoft Word documents and PDF files.
No word on if you can use this with a PDA and wireless internet access.
In conjuction with that, if you are curious how email can be used in genealogy research, Renee, at Renee’s Genealogy Blog, posted an article, Using Email to Organize Your Research. It could be a little difficult with a small screen, but it’s an option.

Pocket Genealogist has had two updates over the past few days. Pocket Genealogist is a PocketPC/Windows Mobile based genealogy application. One major change – you can now install the public beta onto a device that has a production version installed (but databases are not interchangeable, for good reason).
